Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho

Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho – Paêbirú

“Nas Paredes da Pedra Encantada, Os Segredos Talhados Por Sumé” [1975]

Crazy, outer-space psychedelic theme about Sumé, a character of Tupi and Guarani indian mythology. Tales tell that Sumé was between the indians, before the coming of portuguese and spanish settlers to South America, trasmitting them lots of knowledge (introducing for example the cultivation of mandioca, mate or sweet-potato). There’s still and old indian road in Brasil called Paêbiru (the road of the sun), that was allegedly opened by this character.
Sumé, according to the local folk, left some of his teachings engraved in a mysterious stone called Pedra de Ingá (Paraíba, Brasil) and that’s the theme in the lyrics of this song (it translates like “In the Walls of the Enchanted Stone, The Secrets Engraved by Sumé”).

Some YoYo Stuff: An observation of the observations of Don Van Vliet by Anton Corbijn, 1993

Don van Vliet, alias “Captain Beefheart”, is one of the most influential, misunderstood, talked about, admired, copied, treasured, loved and quoted musicians and yet he is still an obscure and mysterious artist. His quite abrupt artistic transformation from working with a microphone to a paintbrush in 1982 and his consequent move from the desert to the ocean meant even less direct contact with the outside world than before. Subsequently there is very little information about Don from this time onwards and this short black-and-white film made in 1993 is an unique opportunity to see and hear this unique man. The film is approximately 13 minutes long, directed and photographed in black and white.

Vine of the Soul: Encounters with Ayahuasca

Synopsis

Can a sacred plant from the Amazon heal our minds and spirits? For centuries, indigenous people of South America have used ayahuasca, a psychoactive plant medicine, to cure all manner of psycho-spiritual ills.

Today, thousands of Westerners, seeking healing and spiritual awakening, attend ayahuasca ceremonies around the world to drink the vision-inducing tea and experience dramatic transformations in their lives.

“Vine of the Soul” is a documentary that explores this brave new world, offering insights into the nature of faith, mystical experience and self-healing through a heightened state of consciousness.

Filmmaker Richard Meech follows key protagonists as they journey to Peru – and back home – capturing in verité style both the life-altering epiphanies and nights of terror encountered after drinking the sacred brew.

Is ayahuasca a doorway to direct knowledge of the divine or a path that leads to psychological trauma? Can it cure modern addictions to drugs and alcohol or is ayahuasca itself a possible substance of abuse? Some people call it a medicine, others a sacrament; the Amazonian shamans say it is simply a ‘plant teacher’ that tells you what you need to know.

Throughout the film, in-depth interviews with Peruvian and Canadian shamans, ethnobotanist Dennis McKenna, addiction expert Dr. Gabor Maté and scholar Kenneth Tupper speak to the increasing use of ayahuasca outside the Amazon and the potential benefits for Western medicine, personal spiritual growth and a new understanding of nature.

Featuring Guillermo Arévalo, Metsa Niwue and Ronin Niwe. Shot on location at Espíritu de Anaconda near Iquitos, Peru and at other locations in North America.
